Former Indian wicket-keeper bat Saba Karim has questioned Yashasvi Jaiswal’s shot selection after the left-hander was dismissed for 13 runs in the second innings of the second Test match against South Africa at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati on Tuesday.
Marco Jansen once again accounted for Jaiswal when the latter was trying to play a cut shot against the lanky pacer. But the southpaw could not manage an outside edge to wicket-keeper, Kyle Verreynne.
Karim noted that Jaiswal was dismissed in a similar fashion against the West Indies when he tried to cut the ball against Jayden Seales when it was too close to his body.
Saba Karim said on ESPN Cricinfo, “This proclivity of Yashasvi Jaiswal for those square cuts is hitting him very bad these days. Maybe the last four-five dismissals, even against West Indies, he was out in a similar manner. Look at what happened to Yashasvi Jaiswal at Eden Gardens. In the first innings – inside edge again, trying to cut a delivery that was too close to him.
“A similar thing happened to him today and there is a strategy behind it too. For three overs, Marco Jansen tried to bounce him out and then sold him a dummy by bowling this delivery which is close to him. Jaiswal felt that there is some room and went for his favorite shot. So that’s the kind of meticulous planning that the South African bowling attack have done against most of the Indian batters.”
The former Indian selector urged Jaiswal to be more careful and come up with clarity and better shot selection.
“At times, when you are growing in your career, bowlers tend to figure out some kind of a game plan – how to induce that risk from the batter and that is what has happened in the case of Yashasvi Jaiswal. Jayden Seales got him out in Ahmedabad in similar manner. Yashasvi Jaiswal needs to be careful. He needs to have more clarity and better shot selection.”
India were 27-2 in the second innings at stumps on day four and they have been given a huge target of 549.
