Former Indian all-rounder Sanjay Bangar has opened on Ravindra Jadeja’s spell on the second day of the second Test match against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. Jadeja returned with impressive figures of 3-37 in the 14 overs he bowled.
Bangar said Jadeja should try to challenge the outside edge of the batters, like he did when he dismissed visitors’ opener, Tagenarine Chanderpaul. The left-handed batter got off to a start as he scored 34 runs but he was caught by KL Rahul after Jadeja induced the outside edge.
West Indies ended the second day’s play at 140-4 after India declared, posting a mammoth total of 518-5 on the board.
“I feel he should try to bowl more balls like the one with which he dismissed Chanderpaul because he doesn’t bowl that. If he starts challenging the outside edge as well, you can challenge both edges. We have spoken to him many times about this, that he should bowl around the wicket a little as well,” Sanjay Bangar said on Star Sports.
The former Indian batting coach added that Jadeja needs to vary his line while bowling to the left-handers.
“However, if you have to bowl from over the wicket, bowl from a little closer to the stumps, so that the ball falls on the firm surface, and then goes straight from there. He attempts to always hit the rough from over the wicket. If he mixes it up, I feel you will find the wickets column increasing fast,” Bangar observed.
On the other hand, Jadeja showered praise on Ravindra Jadeja’s spell, stating a bowler is bound to succeed in Test cricket if he can bowl at a particular spot.
“Today’s day was in the captain and vice-captain’s name. He bowls at one spot. That is this bowler’s huge strength, and in Test cricket, you get success many times if you have the ability to bowl at one spot,” he said.
“Two things are almost guaranteed with Jadeja. One is that the over will finish in one-and-a-half minutes, and secondly, he will bowl at the same spot repeatedly. He is neither going to give you too many balls to cut or pull nor will he bowl balls under the bat that can be driven. If there is even slight help on the pitch, he definitely extracts it,” Chopra observed.
West Indies are struggling at 183-8 on the third day’s morning.
