Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar said he would have dropped Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the India A match against Afghanistan A after fight controversy in 2026 tri-series if he had been the India A coach. Sooryavanshi, who has hogged the limelight in the last two months for his pyrotechnics in IPL 2026, was involved in an altercation with Vishen Halambage.
After Sri Lanka A won the Super Over, the home team players celebrated aggressively in front of Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Suryansh Shedge. During the customary post-match handshake, Halambage reportedly told Sooryavanshi. “Go home. This is not the IPL.”
Sooryavanshi then lost his cool and shoved the Sri Lankan all-rounder, forcing the other players to come in between to stop the fight.
“If I was India A coach or manager I would have left Vaibhav Suryavanshi out for this game v AFG. Only to let him know that’s it’s not OK to get physical on the field. Whatever the provocations,” Sanjay Manjrekar tweeted on X.
According to Cricbuzz, senior Sri Lanka A players discussed the matter in the dressing room after the match and have reached out to India A and Sooryavanshi, showing their regret over the incident.
Meanwhile, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed they will not take any action against Sooryavanshi.
“We will let our players concentrate on the tournament, and they should not be distracted by any collateral issues,” Saikia told Sportstar.
Sooryavanshi breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct since he made ‘inappropriate physical contact with a player, player support personnel, umpire, match referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an international match.’
Sooryavanshi has been fined 50% of his match-fee and was handed two demerit points for his aggressive action.
