Former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar believes the upcoming T20 World Cup should be stripped of the ‘World Cup’ tag. Manjrekar reckons it should be called World T20, as it was originally called.

The cricketer-turned-commentator said the ODI World Cup, which is held every four years, deserves the World Cup title name in its purest form.

Sanjay Manjrekar said on X, “For me the ‘Cricket World Cup’ will always be the 50 overs World Cup. The T20 version held every two years must not be given the same status of a World Cup that comes once in 4 years. I prefer the original name for it – The WorldT20.”

Meanwhile, the upcoming T20 World Cup will be the 10th edition at the top level. Team India is the reigning champions as Rohit Sharma’s men defeated South Africa by seven runs in the summit clash in the West Indies in 2024.

India will look to become the first team to defend their T20 World Cup title and also become the first team to win the crown on three occasions. The Men in Blue won the inaugural edition in 2007 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy.

India is in red-hot form as they have suffered only four losses in T20Is since the start of 2025. Suryakumar Yadav’s team has won the series against England, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

India is currently taking on the Kiwis in a T20I series. The fifth and final T20I between India and New Zealand will be played at Thiruvanthapuram on Saturday.

India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against the USA on February 7.
