Sanju Samson out again as India ring the changes for Zimbabwe tour

    July 6, 2026

Just two days after being left out of India’s playing XI, T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament Sanju Samson has suffered another setback, this time being omitted from India’s squad for the upcoming three-match T20I tour of Zimbabwe.

The BCCI selectors have made six changes to the squad following India’s disappointing start under new captain Shreyas Iyer. Coming into the side are Prabhsimran Singh, Ashok Sharma, Yash Thakur, Mayank Yadav, Rinku Singh and Harsh Dubey, while Samson, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Washington Sundar, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana all make way.

Whether every omission should be viewed as a genuine dropping or simply workload management remains unclear. Given the relatively low-profile nature of the Zimbabwe tour, the selectors may have opted to rotate certain players. However, regardless of the reasoning behind each individual change, it is difficult to ignore the message that has been sent to several members of the squad.

The spotlight inevitably falls on Samson. After a remarkable T20 World Cup campaign that earned him the Player of the Tournament award, his form has dipped alarmingly. Since the World Cup, he has failed to produce meaningful contributions with the bat, and after first losing his place in the playing XI, he now finds himself out of the squad altogether. It is a reminder that reputations alone rarely guarantee extended opportunities in Indian cricket, particularly given the depth of talent competing for places.

India’s recent performances have only added to the pressure. Under Iyer’s captaincy, the defending T20 World Cup champions are still searching for their first victory. That run of results appears to have prompted the selectors to reassess their options and broaden the player pool ahead of a busy international calendar.

Among the new faces, Prabhsimran’s inclusion is particularly encouraging. The Punjab wicketkeeper-batter has consistently showcased his attacking ability and has developed into one of the most exciting young batters in domestic and franchise cricket. His call-up is well deserved, although breaking into the playing XI may prove difficult with both Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Ishan Kishan already ahead of him in the wicketkeeping pecking order.

Ashok Sharma is another player who deserves attention. Considered one for the future, his selection suggests the management is keen to reward strong domestic performances and invest in emerging talent rather than relying solely on established names.

The Zimbabwe series may not carry the weight of a major ICC tournament, but the selection decisions surrounding it could prove significant. Whether these are simply cosmetic changes designed to freshen up the squad or evidence that the BCCI selectors are genuinely prepared to make tough calls will become clearer over the coming weeks. For now, one thing is certain: competition for places in India’s T20 side has intensified once again.
