Seasoned Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has shared insights into his battle with injuries and the mental resilience needed to make a national comeback. After a lengthy rehabilitation following an ankle surgery post the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia, Shami is back in India’s Champions Trophy squad and set to feature in the T20I series against England starting later tonight.
Speaking about his journey, Shami admitted to grappling with fear during the initial stages of his recovery but emphasized the importance of mental strength.
“It is difficult for any player to get injured after being in full flow, go to the NCA (National Cricket Academy) for rehabilitation, and then make a comeback,” he said. “When you go through injuries, I feel you grow stronger as an athlete.”
The 34-year-old pacer returned to competitive cricket through the domestic circuit, representing Bengal in the Ranji Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and Vijay Hazare Trophy. Despite impressive performances, including a seven-wicket haul in the Ranji Trophy and 11 wickets in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, a swelling in his left knee forced him to miss the Border-Gavaskar Test series in Australia.
Reflecting on his recovery process, Shami said, “You have to repeat a lot of things while being mentally strong. If you get injured, you have to make a comeback for your team and your country. So fight and grow.”
Shami credited his rehabilitation phase for improving his fitness and refining his skills. “The rhythm is very important. Everything in life has a flow. Whatever it is, your fitness, mindset, and skill are important for bowling,” he explained.
With just 23 T20I appearances since his debut in 2014, Shami’s career in the shortest format has been intermittent. His last match in the format was the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal against England. However, he is confident about his readiness for the upcoming challenges.
“Whatever is done, is done. I have crossed that (injury) phase. If you work hard, you will get the results. Confidence is important for any task,” Shami said.
With a renewed focus on fitness and form, Shami is eager to make an impact in both the Champions Trophy and the T20I series.
