India’s all-rounder Shardul Thakur believes Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced their Test retirement as they felt they can’t contribute or drive the format as they used to do. While Rohit announced his Test retirement on May 7, Kohli called it a day on May 12, sending shocking waves in the cricketing world.
The duo’s experience in English conditions would have been imperative but India would look to begin a new chapter in their Test folklore under Shubman Gill’s leadership.
Shardul Thakur said on RevSportz, “They are the most senior figures in the game, but such decisions are personal. It comes when they feel they can’t contribute or drive the format as before. There is a great deal of protection when senior players are around, and having a good mix of senior and junior players in the team provides flourishing results.”
Thakur added that the young players will need to grab their opportunities in order to savor success on the tough England tour.
“Jaddu is now the most experienced. This tour will test everyone, with new responsibilities, including leadership roles. It’s a fresh challenge, but we have the talent. Young players must seize this opportunity to build their own legacy.”
The 33-year-old all-rounder from Mumbai said weather is the most challenging while playing in England and they must adapt to new conditions as soon as possible.
“I think weather is the biggest challenge in England. In one day, you can see all three weathers. It gets suddenly cold. When the sun is out it is nice and warm. And when it’s cloudy, it’s starts drizzling again,” said Thakur.
The opening Test match between India and England will be played at Leeds, Headingley from June 20 onwards.
