Indian captain Shreyas Iyer has shed light on his communication with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the T20I series against the West Indies, which ended in a 2-2 draw. Iyer has told Sooryavanshi that he will get his opportunities and he needs to be consistent with his process.
The youngster didn’t get to play a single game in the five-match series against the Windies as Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma opened the innings for the hosts. Sooryavanshi returned with scores of 38 and 15 in the Asian Games semifinal against Sri Lanka and Pakistan respectively. Earlier, the young lad scored 151 runs in three T20Is against Zimbabwe and was awarded Player of the Series.
Sooryavanshi had hogged the limelight in IPL 2026 after he amassed 776 runs in 16 matches of the tournament and was awarded MVP in the previous season.
Shreyas Iyer said in the post-match presentation, “So, I just keep telling him, [Vaibhav Suryavanshi] you will get your opportunities. If you’re consistent with your process, mindset a bit light and not think too much about not getting an opportunity… you have to wait sometimes. We’ve got two fantastic openers who’ve been consistent throughout.”
India has always had hectic scheduling and now the team is all set to travel to New Zealand. Iyer admitted they are used to regular traveling after the conclusion of the T20I series against the West Indies.
He said, “Just like another day, we’re used to the travel. Not easy to recover and see to it that our routines are intact, but we’ve been doing that well. Adjusting to conditions pretty fast. As long as we’re maintaining this consistently, it’s good for the team.”
India would play five T20Is against New Zealand.
