India’s newly appointed T20I skipper Shreyas Iyer has revealed that he likes to play with an aggressive mindset and wants to his players to embrace the same style amid the T20I series against England. Iyer’s T20I captaincy didn’t start on a positive note as India suffered a 0-2 series loss against Ireland.
India was not up to the mark in all three departments of the game against the Irish team. Meanwhile, Iyer has an impressive captaincy record in the IPL and he would look to lead from the front after managing scores of 3 and 10 in the two games against Ireland.
Iyer said via BCCI.TV, “I just like being menacing to the opponents. I want to have that aggressive and fearless approach when I step on to the field. I want my troops to rally around that mindset, where the opponents are intimidated by our personality and appearance on the field. It’s like a war for me when I step on to the field. I want to win every match and that’s the mindset I want to imbibe on each and every team member.”
“We were World champions and this is a new paragraph which starts altogether where I am the leader of the team. And we are starting from zero again. It is definitely not the start we wanted against Ireland but it was a great learning curve for all of us. We have to build that camaraderie where each of us trust and support one another.”
Iyer revealed he has a great relationship with veteran Indian batter Rohit Sharma, who is known to get the best out of the youngsters.
“Interacting with Rohit Sharma, it’s like you are just having a chat with your brother. He is that sort of figure who has also helped me in my domestic career. It’s always been easy to interact with him,” said Iyer (via the aforementioned source).
The Mumbai batter also spoke highly about his predecessor, Suryakumar Yadav.
“Surya is a similar character. I’ve played a lot with him and just before coming here, he gave me inputs about how the management and players are going to be in certain situations.”
India will take on England in the first T20I on Wednesday.
