India’s vice-captain Shubman Gill has lauded India’s batting unit and said the current batting line-up is the best he has been part of. India has batting till number eight and has a good mix of youth and experience.
The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, and Shreyas Iyer have got all the experience under their belt. In the Champions Trophy 2025, the Men in Blue has come up with a collective effort with the bat.
“This is the best Indian batting lineup I have been part of. All-time greats Virat bhai and Rohit bhai. Rohit bhai is one of the best openers, So much depth in our batting. Everyone, KL, Hardik, Shreyas,” Gill said in the pre-match press conference ahead of the final.
Before the final, Kohli has scored 217 runs in four matches of the Champions Trophy 2025 at an average of 72.33 and a strike rate of 83.14 whereas Shreyas Iyer has scored 195 runs at 48.75.
On the other hand, Gill has been given the vice-captaincy role and said his job as a leader is to motivate the young bowlers, who are under pressure.
“I have learned a lot. There is an added responsibility. There are a lot of young players. My role is to talk to young bowlers under pressure, understand whether they are following the plans. We are motivating each other, trying to push each other. If there is pressure on someone, we see how we can help him. This is as important as taking a five-for or scoring a hundred,” Gill said.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma has lost 14 tosses in a row and Gill said they talk about the toss but in a light way.
“As a batsman you’re always prepared to bat first. We talk about it (losing toss) but in a light way,” Gill remarked.
Gill added that they will be motivated to give their absolute best in the summit clash against New Zealand.
“Winning the title in 2024 doesn’t mean we are less hungry but it gives some momentum. Whatever matches you play, you look to do well. Obviously, you can’t score a hundred every time. But in a big match, you try to see out a few deliveries (to get your eye in),” Gill concluded.
