Shubman Gill has been named as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma at the helm, the selectors announced on Saturday. Rohit led India with great success in the ODI format and took the team to glory in 2024 T20 World Cup, and 2025 Champions Trophy.
India had a dominant run in the 2023 ODI World Cup under Rohit’s leadership but could not cross the last hurdle against Australia.
On the other hand, Gill’s first assignment as an ODI captain will be the three-match ODI series against Australia. The youngster has led in only six List A matches and he would look to lead from the front. Gill has played 55 ODIs so far in his career with 2775 runs and eight centuries to his name.
Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been retained in the ODI squad, ending speculations regarding his careers.
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar said it is very difficult to have three different captains for three different formats.
Hardik Pandya hasn’t been included in both ODIs and T20Is squad due to an injury, which he suffered in the Asia Cup. Jasprit Bumrah is not part of the ODI squad but he is included in the T20I team.
India’s ODI squad: Shubman Gill (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (VC), Axar Patel, KL Rahul (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Harshit Rana, Mohammed Siraj, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Dhruv Jurel (WK), Yashasvi Jaiswal.
