Former New Zealand fast bowler Simon Doull has questioned Rishabh Pant’s T20 credentials amid his poor form in the ongoing IPL 2025. After the break, Pant could not turn his fortunes, getting dismissed for only seven runs against Sunrisers Hyderabad despite playing at home in Lucknow on Monday.
Pant was caught and bowled by Sri Lankan pacer Eshan Malinga as LSG suffered a six-wicket loss. The left-hander has scored 135 runs in 11 innings at an average of 12.27 and a strike rate of 100 in the ongoing IPL 2025.
Pant has managed double digit scores on a solitary occasion in the last four innings. Thus, the wicket-keeper bat hasn’t been able to lead from the front in the ongoing season. Pant was bought for a whopping amount of INR 27 crore in the mega auction, making him the most expensive player in IPL history.
“It’s his worst format, and they were desperate to go after him. He has had a poor season, and he has not set huge standards, really high standards that he has completely dipped now. He has just been an okay player as far as T20 cricket is concerned,” Doull said on Cricbuzz.
“He’s an unbelievable Test match player, and sometimes you see the shots he plays in Test, you think that he must be a great T20 player, but his record would not suggest that he is a great T20 player,” he added.
Meanwhile, Pant has scored 1209 runs in 76 T20I matches at an average of 23.25 and a strike rate of 127.26.
Pant has better numbers in the IPL, scoring 3419 runs in 123 matches at an average of 32.88 and a strike rate of 146.12.
LSG will next take on the Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad on Thursday.
