Smriti Mandhana Begins India Captaincy Era Against Zimbabwe With Focus on T20 Improvement

    October 16, 2026

Smriti Mandhana will begin her journey as India’s full-time all-format captain when the Women in Blue face Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series starting Friday in Raipur. The historic contest will mark the first bilateral series between the two nations.

Speaking at her first press conference as permanent captain, Mandhana highlighted the need for a crucial 10 percent improvement to transform India from a competitive side into consistent title winners.

Despite recent triumphs at the Asia Cup and Asian Games, India continues to face challenges in T20 cricket. Consecutive group-stage exits surrounding its memorable 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup victory have exposed areas requiring attention.

With the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy scheduled to take place on home soil next year, Mandhana faces an important period of rebuilding and tactical adjustments.

One of India’s biggest concerns remains its middle-order batting. Since the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, batters occupying positions four to seven have contributed just 1,924 of the team’s 5,662 runs, accounting for 33.9 percent.

In comparison, England’s middle order has contributed 40.21 percent, while Australia and South Africa have recorded 35.24 and 34.65 percent, respectively.

India’s openers, meanwhile, have contributed 47.03 percent of the team’s runs, highlighting the heavy dependence on its top order.

Former captain Harmanpreet Kaur will also face scrutiny over her batting approach at No. 4. With leadership responsibilities removed, the experienced batter will be expected to improve her scoring tempo and strengthen the middle order.

The Zimbabwe series could also provide opportunities for emerging players. G. Kamalini remains an important prospect, while Anushka Sharma and Nikki Prasad could compete for opportunities in Jemimah Rodrigues’ absence through injury.

India’s bowling remains a major strength despite several unavailable players. Renuka Singh Thakur, Amanjot Kaur and Kashvee Gautam are undergoing rehabilitation, while Shreyanka Patil has missed selection despite being fit.

The impressive rise of Sree Charani, alongside experienced all-rounder Deepti Sharma, provides stability. Prema Rawat and Jintimani Kalita will also hope for increased opportunities.

Fielding improvement is another priority for Mandhana, who previously emphasised the issue during her vice-captaincy.

Zimbabwe, meanwhile, will enter the series encouraged by its recent ODI victory over West Indies, although facing India presents a considerably tougher challenge.

Following the three T20Is in Raipur, both teams will travel to Vadodara for a three-match ODI series next week.

For Mandhana, the upcoming matches represent more than a leadership debut. They offer an opportunity to address India’s weaknesses and begin building a team capable of delivering sustained success across formats.
