The Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium stood frozen in disbelief before erupting into deafening celebration as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi delivered another extraordinary performance for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL Eliminator against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Wednesday.
The teenage sensation produced one of the most destructive knocks in playoff history, hammering 97 off just 29 deliveries with five boundaries and 12 towering sixes. His breathtaking assault dismantled Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling attack and laid the foundation for Rajasthan Royals’ commanding 47-run victory, which secured a place in Qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans on Friday.
Sooryavanshi, who has rapidly become one of the biggest attractions of the tournament, showed no signs of pressure despite the high-stakes encounter. From the moment he arrived at the crease, the youngster attacked with fearless intent, taking apart even the experienced Pat Cummins-led bowling unit. His clean hitting left both opponents and spectators stunned as the Royals raced to 136 for one in the first 10 overs.
The opener’s innings also saw him rewrite the record books. When he launched his seventh six of the evening, Sooryavanshi surpassed Chris Gayle’s long-standing mark for the most sixes in a single IPL season. The teenager has now smashed an astonishing 65 sixes this campaign, underlining the remarkable impact he has made in his breakthrough year.
He came agonisingly close to a historic century as well. Just three runs short of the landmark, Sooryavanshi attempted another aggressive stroke against Praful Hinge, looking to clear the boundary for the fourth time in the over. However, his slash off a short delivery was caught by R. Smaran at deep third man. The youngster walked back visibly disappointed, though the standing ovation from the crowd reflected the magnitude of his innings.
After Sooryavanshi’s dismissal, Dhruv Jurel maintained the momentum with a rapid 50 off 21 balls. Yet Rajasthan’s final total of 243 for eight felt slightly underwhelming considering the explosive start, with several middle-order batters failing to capitalise fully on the platform created.
Sunrisers Hyderabad never truly recovered during their chase. Rajasthan’s pace spearhead Jofra Archer produced a devastating opening spell, removing Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Travis Head with sheer pace and aggression. Hyderabad slumped to 57 for four early in the innings, leaving the chase in serious trouble.
Heinrich Klaasen briefly threatened resistance, but his dismissal to Yash Raj Punja effectively ended Hyderabad’s hopes. Despite a few late contributions, the side was eventually bowled out for 196.
As the night concluded, the applause inside the stadium belonged not only to Rajasthan Royals’ victory but above all to Sooryavanshi, whose fearless batting display once again captured the imagination of the cricketing world.
