South Africa Tests crucial for India’s World Test Championship cycle, says Mohammed Siraj

India’s fast bowler Mohammed Siraj said the South Africa Tests are crucial for the team’s World Test Championship cycle. Shubman Gill’s team was able to draw the five-match Test series against England by 2-2 and then won the two-match Test series against the West Indies by 2-0 at home.

India is currently in third place in the WTC standings with four wins, two losses and one draw. The two-time runners-up of the WTC have a PCT of 61.90.

India would look to make the most of their home conditions and get a positive result against the Proteas, who are the defending champions. Siraj said they are confident ahead of the series against South Africa.

“This series is crucial for the new WTC cycle, especially since South Africa is the defending champion. While they drew 1-1 with Pakistan, we’re confident from our own good form, we created a positive environment, performed well in England, and won against the West Indies,” said Siraj on Star Sports.

Meanwhile, Siraj has picked up 33 wickets in seven matches so far in WTC 2025-27 and is leading the bowling charts with an average of 26.54. The fast bowler from Hyderabad said he has the right rhythm on his side.

“Personally, I’m bowling with good rhythm and looking to make the most of it. Facing strong teams helps identify areas to improve, and I’m really excited for this challenge,” said Siraj.

Siraj had picked 10 wickets in two Test matches against the West Indies at an average of 13. Furthermore, he scalped 23 wickets against England and bagged nine wickets in the final Test match at the Kennington Oval, London.

The opening Test match between India and South Africa will be played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, from November 14 onwards.
