Former England fast bowler Stuart Broad has questioned Shubman Gill’s fitness after the conclusion of the three-match ODI series against England. Gill returned with scores of 80, 31 and 77, scoring a total of 188 runs in three matches at an average of 94 and a strike rate of 99.47.
Gill was India’s highest run-getter in the ODI series as he batted at the top of his game. However, he suffered cramps in the first and third ODI against the hosts.
Broad said everytime Gill reached 70, he suffered a cramp in the series.
Stuart Broad said on For the Love of Cricket YouTube Channel, “Everytime he gets a 70, he’s cramping up. He lost his rhythm in both innings (1st and 3rd ODI).”
On the other hand, Jos Buttler also shed light on Gill’s fitness woes.
He said, “You don’t engage too much with him (Gill) when he is batting. Shreyas Iyer was the one who told me he got cramps in the first ODI. I was surprised because it’s in England and it’s not the 40-degree heat of Ahmedabad that he’s used to batting in. I don’t know what was going on. Maybe he has an underlying injury. But it probably slowed him down and got him out at a crucial time at Lord’s.”
Gill has amassed 3379 runs in 67 ODI matches at an average of 59.28 and thus has an impressive record in the 50-over format.
Broad said,”His ODI numbers are a joke. I remember when Gill’s record first came up on the screen at Birmingham and his average was almost 60. I had to double check almost before reading it out. And it’s not in 10 games either that he averages 60, which is insane,” said Broad (via the aforementioned source).
Gill will next lead India in two-match Test series against Sri Lanka.
