Former Indian batter Subramaniam Badrinath criticised India’s bowling after the hosts lost the third ODI against the West Indies by five wickets on Saturday. India conceded 405 runs in the second game at Guwahati and then could not defend despite putting 351 runs on the board at New Chandigarh on Saturday.
Debutant Anshul Kamboj conceded 82 runs in nine overs he bowled in the third ODI, whereas Auqib Nabi Dar was taken for 84 runs in 8.5 overs he bowled on his debut in the second game.
Gurnoor Brar was also expensive throughout the series, as he conceded runs at an economy rate of 7.54 and bowled with an average of 73.33. Badrinath said India missed the services of Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya.
“This Indian bowling line-up is divided into two types – With Bumrah and Hardik, and without Bumrah and Hardik. This is my honest opinion. It is very inexperienced without Bumrah. They don’t have much skill. Many times your plans as a bowling unit will not work. In these times, you need to adapt. You have to change your plans and try something else. That experience and maturity will only come from playing a lot of cricket. These current bowlers have not played a lot. Not for India, even first-class or T20, they don’t have many matches under the belt,” Subramaniam Badrinath said in a video on his YouTube channel.
The former CSK batter reckons having a weak bowling line-up made Shubman Gill’s job tougher as a captain.
“In this, it becomes very difficult for the captain as well. It becomes very tough for Gill to handle things. In these situations, he does not know how to respond and that is why they are struggling.”
Badrinath highlighted Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are playing whereas Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been overlooked by the selectors as legendary status is mostly given to the batters in India.
“Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are aged. But they are in the team due to their experience and legendary status. Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar are in the same category. They have the same caliber as them when it comes to bowling. But in our country, most of the times the legend status is only given to batters. This has been happening for many years now. When you need experience, even these bowlers can play just how Rohit and Kohli are playing,” he said.
India’s next ODI series is against New Zealand.
