Legendary Sunil Gavaskar said Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer is getting the credit he deserves while leading the franchise in IPL 2025. Iyer has been leading the Mohali-based franchise from the front and has delivered as a leader.
The Mumbai batter has scored 405 runs in the ongoing IPL 2025 at an 50.62 average of and a strike rate of 180.80 in 11 innings. PBKS has won seven out of their 11 matches and they are in a good position to qualify for the playoffs.
“He didn’t get the credit for the IPL victory last season. All the plaudits were given to someone else. It’s the captain, who plays a major role in what’s happening in the middle and not someone sitting in the dugout. See, this year he’s getting fair credit. No one is giving all the credit to Ricky Ponting,” Gavaskar said on Star Sports (via India Today).
On the other hand, Iyer led Kolkata Knight Riders to glory in IPL 2025 but his performances as a leader went under the radar as mentor Gautam Gambhir was given more limelight by the media. The right-hander later admitted he didn’t get the recognition despite leading KKR to the title and thus decided to go under the hammer in the auction. Iyer was bagged for a huge amount of INR 26.75 crore in the mega auction.
“I personally felt I didn’t get the recognition I wanted to after winning the IPL but at the end of the day, as long as you have self integrity and you keep doing the right things when no one is watching, that is more important and that is what I kept doing,” Iyer had told the Times of India after the 2025 Champions Trophy triumph.
PBKS is taking on Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on Sunday.
