Suryakumar Yadav admits being nervous ahead of his international debut

Suryakumar Yadav’s international debut ended up being a major highlight of the five-match T20I series between India and England back in March. The debut of Suryakumar Yadav was long awaited in the Indian cricket fraternity after the Mumbai Indians batsman impressed everyone with his performances in the IPL as well as in domestic cricket.

In his first outing with the bat in international cricket, Yadav slammed a magnificent 28-ball 50 and helped the side win against England. He also ended up winning the Man of the Match award in the process.

However, in a recent chat, the 30-year-old talked about the range of emotions he went through before making a statement with the bat. The departure of his Mumbai Indians captain and India teammate Rohit Sharma was disappointing and Yadav also felt nervous and excited at the same time while padding up.

“If you would have seen properly, I was very excited at that time. Also, I was not happy at that time since Rohit (Sharma) had got out, but when I was going to bat, I was running in, so that shows how excited I was,” Surya said in a video shared by Mumbai Indians on Twitter.

“When I padded up and came to the dug-out, I was nervous, and it should be that way, if you don’t get nervous, how would you perform. When I was going inside, everything started running in my mind, what I have done when I bat at three. I got my answer when I said to myself ‘don’t do anything different, do the same thing, be yourself, that’s it,” he added.

Suryakumar Yadav stole everyone’s breath with a magisterial six off Jofra Archer’s ball to get things started. While discussing that, the right-handed batsman revealed that facing Archer in the IPL gave him the experience to deal with the fast-bowler’s plans. He also mentioned that it was necessary to be calm after arriving to the pitch.

“People speak about the six, what were you feeling on the first ball after making India debut. It was necessary to be a bit calm and I knew what Archer had been doing in the IPL, how he comes hard at the batters. So, at the back of the mind there was a thought that he (Archer) would bowl that particular ball and good that he bowled the same delivery,” Yadav concluded.
