New Zealand captain Kane Williamson was proud of his team’s players after they lost the T20 World Cup final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.
Australia went on to chase down 173 runs after fine knocks from David Warner and Mitchell Marsh to win their maiden T20 World Cup title.
However, New Zealand was magnificent after losing their opening match against Pakistan. The Kiwis went on to defeat India in their second game and then got the better of Afghanistan, Scotland, and Namibia to qualify for the semifinals.
The Blackcaps then went on to beat favorites England in the first semifinal despite being on the backfoot in the run-chase. However, Daryl Mitchell and James Neesham were able to turn the tables.
New Zealand then posted a fighting score of 172 runs in the final after they were put in to bat by Aaron Finch. Kane Williamson played a masterpiece as he scored 85 runs off just 48 balls as he timed the ball to perfection.
On the other hand, Trent Boult had an impressive outing as he scalped two wickets and conceded only 18 runs in his quota of four overs but the Kiwis ended on the wrong side of the result.
Kane Williamson said in the post-match presentation, “We were trying to get a platform and the surface was holding a fraction. But typical to here in Dubai. It was nice to build some partnerships and get what we thought was a competitive total. Only to be chased superbly by Australia. They’re a fantastic side. We certainly made every effort. Guys came out and committed to their plans. They didn’t give an inch really. Really proud of our team’s efforts throughout. Came here in the final and gave it our best shot but it wasn’t enough. Conditions varied a lot from venue to venue but we adjusted well. Nice to get to the big dance. Credit to Australia. Today they really turned it on. High hopes coming into this game. Never nice. Winning and losing are two possible outcomes”.
Kane Williamson once again lead from the front and New Zealand have shown that they are one of the best teams across all the formats. The Blackcaps have been consistent and they are coming up with collective team efforts. The Kane Williamson-led team have made it to the finals of last three major ICC tournaments, which goes to show their consistency.
New Zealand will now tour India for three-match T20I and two-match Test series.
