Virat Kohli’s childhood coach Rajkumar Sharma believes India wouldn’t pick more than two spinners in their T20 World Cup squad. The T20I showpiece will be played in Australia and the spinners are not known to get a lot of help while playing Downunder.
India is expected to back Yuzvendra Chahal as the leg-spinner has been consistent for the team but didn’t have the best run in the Asia Cup. Furthermore, Ravindra Jadeja is likely to be ruled out of the T20 World Cup as he recently underwent a knee surgery, which is a huge blow for the team.
India has spin options like Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, and Ravi Bishnoi, who all will be in the reckoning for the team’s selection.
Sharma said that Hardik Pandya will play an instrumental role in the success of the team as he will get extra bounce on the Australian pitches.
Rajkumar Sharma said on India News Sports, “I don’t think more than two spinners will be needed in the squad. In Australia, you need five pace options along with Hardik Pandya as the all-rounder as you will get pace, bounce, as well as swing upfront. So there is no need to take an extra spinner.”
Former Delhi cricketer added that Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal will be the front spinners in the team as they have been performing consistently.
“Axar and Chahal will be the front-runners for the spots among the spinners. Both have experience and Axar also has the batting ability to replace Jadeja. Chahal didn’t have a good Asia Cup but you cannot write off such a wicket taker by just one bad tournament.”
India’s T20 World Cup squad is expected to be announced this week and it will be interesting to note the team’s composition.
The Rohit Sharma-led team didn’t have a great run in the Asia Cup and they will be determined to turn the tables in the upcoming series against Australia and South Africa.
