India’s ace fast bowler Mohammed Shami has shed light on Rohit Sharma’s captaincy style. Shami has a lot of experience of playing under Rohit’s leadership and he said the best thing about the Indian captain is the fact he gives his players all the freedom and backs them to the hilt.
However, at the same time, Shami admitted that if a player fails to meet the expected expectations, then Rohit doesn’t shy away from giving him his piece of mind.
Shami suffered an ankle injury and could not take part in the IPL 2024 for Gujarat Titans and India in the T20 World Cup.
“The best thing about Rohit Sharma is that he gives you freedom but if you don’t live up to his expectations then the reactions we see on the screen, the ones we understand without him saying anything, start to come out,” Shami said at the award function.
Shami hasn’t been picked for the Duleep trophy and it would be interesting to note when he would return to action.
On the other hand, India’s flamboyant batter Shreyas Iyer concurred with Shami and said the players understand Rohit’s feelings when they lack somewhere in the field.
“Shami is actually right. We have to fill in the worlds. Woh, yeh, usko, isko. So these words are for us to fill. We just visualise, who and what it is that he is talking about. But we understand his feelings; we’ve been playing with him for so many years,” Iyer said.
Rohit then said, “I keep asking them to be themselves, right? But for that, I have to be myself,” triggering a laughter in the arena.
Rohit will lead India in the upcoming two-match Test series against Bangladesh.
