With the Asia Cup 2023 in full swing, it’s evident that the Indian squad is far from its peak form. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the team delivered below-par performances against Pakistan in their tournament opener, followed by a lackluster showing against Nepal.
Nevertheless, the game against Pakistan ended in an abandonment, and India secured a victory against Nepal, propelling them into the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup 2023. Despite this achievement, Captain Rohit Sharma acknowledged that there is substantial room for improvement.
“We haven’t been at our best, but a few guys are coming out after months out of the game. Once we move ahead in the Super Fours, there’s no room for complacency,” remarked Rohit Sharma during the post-match presentation after the win against Nepal.
“In the back of our mind, we knew what our 15 would look like,” Sharma added, shedding light on the team’s preparation for the upcoming World Cup.
Additionally, Rohit Sharma addressed the speculation regarding the selection of India’s World Cup squad based on Asia Cup performances. He stated that every player was well aware of the World Cup squad composition before arriving in Sri Lanka and emphasized that only one or two spots in India’s World Cup squad remain uncertain.
“When we came here, in the back of our mind, we knew what our (World Cup) 15 would look like, except maybe one or two spots,” Rohit affirmed.
Looking ahead, Team India is set to kickstart their World Cup campaign on October 8, facing off against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. This will be followed by a high-stakes encounter against Pakistan in Ahmedabad on October 14. With these pivotal matches early in the World Cup, India aims to secure wins and build crucial momentum for the tournament ahead.
