Former Kiwis pacer Tim Southee has said that New Zealand have handled Jasprit Bumrah well in Test cricket ahead of the upcoming two-match series against India. He also backed Mohammed Siraj to trouble the hosts if he bowls at the right length.
Surprisingly, Bumrah has taken nine wickets in five Test matches against New Zealand at an average of 45.44 and thus has failed to create a positive impact. In comparison, he has taken 234 wickets in 52 Tests overall at an average of 19.79.
Speaking about Bumrah’s record against New Zealand, Southee said on Sony Sports Network, “I think New Zealand have played Bumrah incredibly well in Test cricket. I don’t think Bumrah has played in an Indian team that has beaten New Zealand. So, I think New Zealand play him exceptionally well in Tests.”
Southee said Bumrah’s bowling partner, Mohammed Siraj, can trouble the Blackcaps’ batters with the way he bowls.
“I’m a big fan of Mohammed Siraj and the way he bowls. If he can get his length right in New Zealand, he could be a handful. The energy he brings, the way he runs in all day, the type of bowler he is, there’s no reason why he can’t have a lot of success in New Zealand conditions. There’s a lot to like about him in particular,” said Southee (via the aforementioned source).
New Zealand had registered a 3-0 series win against India while playing in Indian conditions in 2024. This was India’s first Test series loss on their home soil in 12 years.
The first Test match between India and New Zealand is scheduled to begin in Wellington on November 19, while the second match will be played in Christchurch from November 27.
