Travis Head’s wife Jessica was abused by Indian fans after her husband had a verbal spat with Virat Kohli. Head and Kohli were seen having a heated argument during RCB’s batting innings when they were chasing 256 against SRH at Hyderabad on Friday.
After the match, when players were doing the customary handshake, Kohli refused to shake hands with Travis Head and went past him to shake the next player’s hand.
Jessica revealed she had received similar abusive messages after Head scored a match-winning century in the World Cup final in 2023 at Ahmedabad.
“It feels like a repeat of the abuse that happened after the World Cup,” she told Australian media outlet The Advertiser.
“I woke up to my socials blasting… we are fine but they are attacking my friends and family.”
“I think across all sports at the moment there’s an important conversation around mental health, perspective and the way we speak to one another,” she said.
“Passion will always be part of sport, but so is remembering there are real people and families behind the game. Hopefully this encourages more kindness, and support for one another.”
Meanwhile, reportedly Travis Head asked Kohli to play more aggressively and the RCB batter then told Head to bowl himself despite being an impact player. After Kohli was dismissed, Head once again passed a remark on the batter, further adding fuel to the fire.
There is no doubt that fans cross the line when they threaten or abuse a player’s family and friends. In this age of social media, this has become a norm but strict actions are required from the BCCI and the social media platforms to keep a check on such incidents.
