Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron reckons Abhishek Sharma can evolve his game against the spinners by using the depth of the crease. Sharma is not known to do that a lot and he mostly uses his feet to get to the pitch of the ball.
The left-hander has struggled a bit against the off-spinners in his career and has been dismissed seven times by off-spinners. Aaron has observed Sharma from close quarters as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling coach in the IPL.
Abhishek was dismissed cheaply for 20 runs in the second T20I against the West Indies, once again falling to Roston Chase, who got the better of him in the series opener as well.
“I think the one part of his game, against spin especially, where Abhishek Sharma could maybe evolve a little bit is using the depth of the crease. Abhishek Sharma loves to plant his front foot and really score from there,” Varun Aaron said on Star Sports show Game Plan.
“You never see him really use the depth, go back, and try to score runs. Abhishek Sharma is not somebody who steps out too much, but he can go back and he can use the depth of the crease,” he added.
The former Indian pacer highlighted that Abhishek was dismissed in a different manner in the first two games by Chase.
“Both were very different dismissals. He first bowled far from Abhishek Sharma, and then he cramped Abhishek Sharma. The length is extremely important. You will see the maximum dismissals at the length that’s attacking the stumps,” he replied.
Aaron pointed out that deliveries which hit the top of off-stump can trouble any batter, especially Abhishek.
“You can get sucked in to bowl very full, try to bowl the yorker, or try to bowl too far away from him. Ya, you do get a couple of dismissals here and there, but if you can attack the top of the stumps with any batsman in the world, especially Abhishek Sharma, you are going to get his wicket,” Aaron observed.
The third T20I between India and the West Indies will be played at Indore on Sunday.
