Former Indian fast bowler Varun Aaron has slammed Shubman Gill’s critics after the fourth T20I against Australia. Gill scored a crucial knock of 46 runs off 39 balls in the penultimate game of the series to help India post 167 runs on the board after the visitors were put into bat by Mitchell Marsh.
It wasn’t the easiest of pitches to bat on, and Gill was able to hold the Indian innings together. The right-hander scored four fours and one six and scored his runs at a strike rate of 117.95.
However, after Gill’s knock, he was criticised on the social media platforms for his below-par strike rate.
Aaron said one can bet on Shubman Gill’s batting when the conditions aren’t friendly for the batters.
“The thing with Gill is that when conditions don’t favour batting, you can always put your money on Shubman Gill because of his technique, because of his poise, and because of his game awareness. He knows exactly what wicket offers, what kind of stroke play, and he plays according to that. So you need somebody like him in the T20 setup,” Varun Aaron said on said on Star Sports.
“When people raise questions about Shubman Gill being in the T20 setup, it never makes sense to me because this is what he gives you when everybody else fails on a wicket that is slightly difficult compared to the other wickets in this whole series. He gives you a 46, which is worth its weight in gold,” he added.
Gill’s place in the T20I team has been questioned as he hasn’t been able to come up with a big score. The Indian captain scored 127 runs in the Asia Cup and has returned with scores of 37, 5, 15, and 46 in four matches against Australia.
The fifth and final T20I of the series between Australia and India will be played at the Gabba, Brisbane, on Saturday.
