India’s preparations for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan have suffered a significant setback, with star batter Virat Kohli set to miss the three-match assignment due to a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL 2026 final.
Kohli, who now represents India exclusively in the 50-over format following his retirement from Tests and T20 internationals, reportedly aggravated his right hamstring while playing a crucial innings for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Sunday’s IPL title clash against Gujarat Titans. Although the veteran batter completed his knock, he was visibly uncomfortable throughout the latter stages of the match.
The injury has since worsened, raising concerns among team management and selectors ahead of a busy international schedule. India’s senior national selection committee is expected to meet on Saturday, coinciding with the opening day of the Test match in New Chandigarh, to finalize squads for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England.
During the meeting, selectors are expected to review detailed fitness reports concerning Kohli, along with updates on captain Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Hardik Pandya. Both Rohit and Hardik had been included in the provisional ODI squad, subject to fitness clearance, and any necessary replacements are likely to be announced after the committee concludes its discussions.
Kohli’s potential absence comes at a disappointing time for both the player and the national team. The 37-year-old was widely expected to carry his exceptional IPL form into the ODI setup after another productive season with Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The batting icon finished IPL 2026 with an impressive tally of 675 runs, once again proving his value at the highest level. His performances were instrumental in helping RCB secure a second consecutive IPL title, cementing his status as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
However, signs of discomfort were evident even after the final. Videos shared by the franchise during the team’s victory celebrations showed Kohli moving cautiously, suggesting the injury was more serious than initially believed.
With the ODI series against Afghanistan scheduled to begin in Dharamsala on June 13, India may now be forced to reshuffle its batting plans. Kohli’s experience and consistency have long been central to India’s success in the 50-over format, and his absence would leave a significant gap in the middle order.
The final decision on his availability is expected following the selection committee meeting, but current indications suggest the veteran batter will be sidelined as he focuses on recovery and regaining full fitness ahead of future international commitments.
