India’s all-rounder Washington Sundar has showered praise on head coach Gautam Gambhir for getting the best out of the players on the England tour. Sundar was able to grab his opportunities in the Anderson-Tendulkar series with both hands.
The left-hander scored his maiden Test century in the second innings of the fourth Test match at Old Trafford, Manchester, when he was promoted to number five after Rishabh Pant suffered a fractured toe.
Sundar scored 284 runs in four Test matches against England at an impressive average of 47.33. The off-spinner also scalped seven wickets in as many games at an average of 38.57.
Sundar said he didn’t enjoy bowling to Gautam Gambhir in the IPL as the latter had a fantastic record against him.
Sundar said in an interview with Wisden, “100%, he also No. 5 on the back of his jersey. And obviously, he was an extremely elegant left-hander. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was bowling to him in the IPL. He was super successful against me, but he is an amazing human being. He has had so much faith in all of us that we would fight at all times and win the game. Glad to see him happy at the end of the series.”
Sundar also lauded captain Shubman Gill and Gambhir for their precise communication with the players regarding the selection.
“Credit to them for having such a calm dressing room throughout the series. Their communication was precise and clear on what was expected. Both of them have a lot of belief in their players and that really helps in the bigger picture,” said Sundar (via aforementioned source).
Sundar must have definitely grown in confidence after performing consistently on the England tour.
