India all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the upcoming five-match T20 series against New Zealand after suffering a side strain, dealing a blow to the team just days before the series opener. The contest is set to begin next Wednesday in Nagpur.
Washington picked up the injury during the first One-Day International against New Zealand in Vadodara on Sunday. The 26-year-old experienced discomfort in his left lower rib area while bowling and was unable to continue at full intensity. Following medical assessment, he was ruled out of the remainder of the three-match ODI series.
Reports suggest that Washington is unlikely to recover in time for the T20 series, prompting the team management to exclude him from the squad as a precautionary measure. Confirming the development, a Board of Control for Cricket in India official said, “Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the T20 series against New Zealand due to a side strain.”
The injury has also raised concerns over Washington’s availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup, which begins on February 7. With the global tournament approaching rapidly, the Indian team management is expected to closely monitor his recovery timeline to avoid any long-term complications.
Washington has been a valuable asset for India in the shortest format, offering balance to the side with his off-spin and dependable lower-order batting. His absence from the New Zealand series could force the selectors and team think tank to explore alternative all-round options as they fine-tune combinations ahead of the World Cup.
In another setback for India, Tilak Varma has been ruled out of the first three T20 internationals against New Zealand. The young batter recently underwent surgery for a groin injury and will need time to regain match fitness. His unavailability further reduces India’s options in the middle order during the early part of the series.
Despite the injury concerns, the Indian camp remains focused on the task ahead. The series against New Zealand is seen as a crucial preparatory assignment, offering players a chance to impress and cement their places before the T20 World Cup.
The team management is expected to announce replacements or adjustments to the squad in the coming days. With the opening match in Nagpur fast approaching, India will be eager to ensure that injuries do not disrupt their momentum or plans as they build toward a major international tournament.
For now, both Washington and Tilak face a race against time, with their recoveries likely to shape India’s selection strategy in the weeks ahead.
