Former Indian Test opener Wasim Jaffer reckons Rohit Sharma should have continued as ODI captain amid the T20I series against the West Indies. Rohit was forced to pass on the ODI captaincy baton to Shubman Gill in October 2025 after the selectors said it is not easy for them to have three different leaders across all formats.
Rohit led the team to glory in the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy and had a fantastic record as a leader.
On the other hand, Shubman Gill has had a tough start to his ODI captaincy stint. In 15 matches Gill has led, India has won eight games whereas they have suffered seven losses.
Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube Channel, “Rohit Sharma should have been retained as the ODI captain. He should have also remained the captain of Mumbai Indians. I won’t say the decision was completely wrong, as Shubman Gill has done well, but when you have someone like Rohit Sharma available, he should be the captain. You can always pass the baton to Shubman Gill after the 50-over World Cup.”
Meanwhile, Gill and Rohit were in fine form in the ODI series against the West Indies. While Gill scored 334 runs in three games of the series at an average of 167, Rohit amassed 225 runs in as many matches at an average of 75.
Rohit was dismissed after scoring 92 runs in the final game at New Chandigarh and former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar was disappointed after the veteran failed to reach his century.
Gavaskar said on India Today, “The reason I was disappointed with Rohit getting out on 92 is that he didn’t get a hundred, and he might possibly quit international cricket after the end of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. And at that particular point in time, when he decides to call it a day, I personally would like Rohit to have more ODI hundreds than his age.”
Rohit will next seen in action in the ODI series against New Zealand.
