Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra feels Shubman Gill rightfully deserves the status of a ‘Prince’ of Indian cricket. Gill scored a magnificent knock of 119 runs in the second innings of the opening Test match against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai and added 167 runs with Rishabh Pant.
This was the fifth Test century for Gill and the youngster has grabbed his opportunity while batting at number three in the red-ball version. Gill scored 452 runs in five Test matches against England at an average of 56.50 and finished as the second-highest run-getter.
Gill has scored 1611 runs in 26 Test matches at an average of 37.47, including five centuries.
Chopra noted that Gill has scored more International centuries than Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli since 2020.
“Who has scored the most hundreds for Team India in this decade? It’s a very interesting one. There was a tweet from CricCrazyJohns, and we said we never realized that. He wrote about the most hundreds for India in this decade in international cricket – Shubman Gill has 12 hundreds in 114 innings. It is absolutely phenomenal,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube Channel.
“Rohit Sharma, in the same timeframe, has played 148 knocks and scored 10 centuries. Virat Kohli has played 149 knocks and scored 10 centuries and both of them are our GOATs (greatest of all times). So Shubman Gill is going far ahead with 12 centuries. We are not giving him the status of ‘Prince’ wrongly,” the former India opener added.
The renowned commentator added that Gill is running towards greatness and backed the youngster to achieve more success in the upcoming seasons.
“He has it in his DNA. I am saying this guy is running towards greatness because he feels, actually he is convinced, that if he puts his mind to matter, greatness beckons. It is a very good story for Indian cricket,” he said (5:40).
The second Test match between India and Bangladesh will be played at Green Park, Kanpur from September 27.
