India’s former batter WV Raman has backed India’s heavy spin attack to deliver the goods in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Indian selectors have picked Axar Patel, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Yuzvendra Chahal in the 15-man squad.
Chahal, Kuldeep, Axar, and Jadeja took 18, 16, 11, and 8 wickets respectively in the recently concluded IPL while playing for their respective franchises. Raman said that West Indies pitches are conducive for spinners and thus India’s quartet will certainly hold the key.
“Let’s not forget that a lot of thought would have gone into it. There must have been enough rationale and thinking behind those additions. Whatever you get to see on the West Indies pitches these days is more conducive to spinners,” Raman said while talking to PTI.
The former Indian Women’s team coach said the Rohit Sharma-led team has a great chance to end the major ICC title drought as they have some big match players in the squad. India last won a major trophy back in 2013 when they clinched the Champions Trophy.
“It has a very good chance. We have a lot of brilliant cricketers who can be match-winners on their days,” he said. “T20 is such a format where you need a bit of luck as well, especially in the knockouts, and that’s where experience also counts, which we have aplenty in the side.”
Meanwhile, Raman also backed Gautam Gambhir to take the coaching role for the Indian team after the T20 World Cup.
“He will definitely be somebody who knows what to do. What he will deliver and not is something I cannot predict since I don’t have a crystal ball in my hand,” Raman stated. “But, as far as his acumen is concerned, he is good. He has also been a good captain in the IPL, and he is a good strategist.”
India will begin their T20 World Cup campaign against Ireland on June 5th.
