Former Indian wicket-keeper bat Dinesh Karthik has dismissed retirement calls for India’s senior players after a 0-3 Test series loss against New Zealand. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin had mundane series and the trio could not deliver the goods.
Rohit scored 91 runs in three Test matches against the Kiwis at an average of 15.17 whereas Virat Kohli could only score 93 runs in three Test matches at an average of 15.50.
Furthermore, Rohit could only manage 42 runs in two Test matches at an average of 10.50 against Bangladesh, Kohli scored 99 runs in the same series at an average of 33. Thus, the veteran duo is under the pump for their ordinary performance in the recent past.
Moreover, Ravichandran Ashwin scalped nine wickets in three Test matches at an average of 41.22 against the Kiwis.
Karthik said on Cricbuzz, “What is the hurry boss? One bad series and already calling for the heads. I don’t think so. I think, if they don’t do well in the next 10 Test matches, then we will come back to this question and then it becomes a fair question, considering it’s going to be another domestic season. For the moment, I don’t think we need to group anyone anywhere.”
Meanwhile, Indian batters’ struggles against the spinners was evident in the three-match series. Karthik admitted India was not up to the mark with both bat and ball.
“Our bowling was not up to the mark. Our spinners, especially the experienced ones, didn’t have a great series. Batting, without a doubt, we lack in ability to play spin. The defence game overall around the world has definitely decreased because of the white-ball formats and that goes without saying but the Indian players have struggled to cope against spin,” Karthik added in the same interaction.
The opening Test match between India and Australia will be played at Perth from November 22 onwards.
