India’s batting coach Vikram Rathour feels Virat Kohli’s biggest quality is his adaptability. Kohli scored a patient knock of 76 runs in the opening Test match against the West Indies at Dominica, which India won by a massive margin of an innings and 141 runs.
The right-hander faced a total of 182 balls and scored five boundaries in his knock. Kohli was able to adapt to the difficult conditions, which was offering a lot of turn to the spinners. The talisman also added 110 runs with debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal, who scored a total of 171 runs in his maiden Test innings.
“As a batting coach, I believe that cricket is about adaptability. He is an aggressive player who likes to dominate definitely but a better player is one who can change his game. A player who can play according to the conditions and team requirements is a better player. This is his biggest quality,” said Rathour in the press conference.
Rathour added Kohli has the skills to adapt to different conditions and formats and he can play according to the team’s requirements.
“He can play different forms differently. He can change his game according to the conditions. He showed it on a wicket that was turning a lot. The way he defended against the left-arm spinner was a lesson for many youngsters,” Rathour added.
The Indian batting coach expressed confidence that Kohli will soon score a Test century. Kohli’s last hundred while playing in foreign conditions came back in 2018 in the MCG Test against Australia.
“Virat’s good form continued for many years. He scored runs consistently for 7 to 8 years. The cricket logic says that the lean phase was about to come. When he lost momentum it went on for some time. There is not much to look at because he is batting well. The way he is playing he will score a century,” said Rathour.
The second Test match will be played from 20th July at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad.
