Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan expressed his disappointment after they were stunned by the Netherlands by 87 runs at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Saturday. The Tigers did a decent job with the ball as they skittled out the Dutch at 229 but they were themselves bowled out for 142 runs.
No Bangladesh batter could even go past the 40-run mark in the run-chase as they failed to show any kind of resistance. The Tigers failed to create any kind of momentum with the bat as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals.
In fact, Bangladesh has disappointed with their batting throughout the tournament, and as a result, they are on the verge of elimination.
“You can say that [it is Bangladesh’s worst World Cup performance] without any doubt,” Shakib Al Hasan admitted, “I don’t have an answer as to why we played this way.”
While the talisman all-rounder feels they were good with the ball, he felt they were sloppy in the field and could not get the job done with the bat.
“We were sloppy in the field. We bowled brilliantly. We haven’t batted the way we can bat throughout the tournament. It is a big concern,” he said.
Hasan added it is a difficult pill to swallow as they were not up to the mark and thus had to pay the price.
“Today was another day when we totally gave the Dutch the two points. It is hard to swallow. It is very difficult to digest. These things can happen in cricket,” he stated.
Barring experienced batters Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah, Hasan feels all of the other batsmen haven’t deliver for the team.
“As a batting unit, if you ask me to summarise our six matches, I would say that we were very poor. Other than Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim, all other batters were not up to the mark,” Shakib added.
Bangladesh have now lost five matches on the bounce and it is going to be difficult for them to make the last four.
The Tigers will next take on Pakistan at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Saturday.
