Former Indian Test opener Aakash Chopra has predicted that World Cup 2023 could belong to Shubman Gill, and the youngster could score at least two hundreds. Gill has been in amazing form in 2023 and he would want to carry the good show in the upcoming ODI showpiece.
The youngster has scored 1230 runs in 20 ODI matches at an unbelievable average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03 in 2023. Out of his total six ODI centuries, five have come in the ongoing year.
Gill scored a fine knock of 104 runs off just 97 balls in the second ODI against Australia at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore, and added 200 runs with Shreyas Iyer. Thus, Gill will look to continue the good show in the upcoming ODI showpiece.
Gill has been providing solid starts to the Indian team along with skipper Rohit Sharma and the duo will hold the key in the World Cup.
“This tournament could be Shubman Gill’s. In all fairness, the tournament will belong to the top three batters. The good ones will make a lot of records. Shubman Gill will score a lot of runs. I feel he will score at least two hundreds; I won’t be surprised if he hits three as well. One of them could be a daddy hundred if he doesn’t get tired. Gill is a quality player and this World Cup could be his,” said Chopra on his YouTube Channel.
The youngster also scored a fine century against Bangladesh in the Asia Cup clash and the renowned commentator lauded him for working hard on facing left-arm spinners.
“At one point of time, it seemed like he gets stuck against left-arm spin. But he showed he can take that on as well during his last hundred in the Asia Cup. It was his best ODI knock in my opinion,” said Chopra.
India will begin their World Cup campaign against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on October 8.
