Former Indian batter Yuvraj Singh reckons Shubman Gill has the potential to become the best player of this generation. Gill has been in stellar form in 2023, scoring 1230 runs in 20 ODI matches at an unbelievable average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 105.03. Out of his total six ODI centuries, five have come in the ongoing year.
Gill scored a fine knock of 104 runs off just 97 balls in the second ODI against Australia at the Holkar Cricket Stadium, Indore, and added 200 runs with Shreyas Iyer. Thus, Gill will look to continue the good show in the upcoming ODI showpiece.
Gill has been providing solid starts to the Indian team along with skipper Rohit Sharma and the duo will hold the key in the World Cup.
“Shubman Gill has the potential to become the best player of this generation. The guy works hard. Since he was 19-20, his attitude has always been like that. He works four times harder than a normal guy since he was a kid. Whatever I have worked with him, he can be the player of this era,” Yuvraj Singh told the Week in an interview.
In fact, Gill has been consistently performing in all three forms of the game. Yuvraj recalled that Gill scored a match-winning knock of 91 runs in the historic Gabba Test match, which India won against Australia. Yuvraj has backed Gill to score runs in tough conditions of SENA countries.
“He (Gill) scored 91 in a Test match which India won. He scored two fifties as well on his first tour to Australia which I don’t know how many players have done. I am sure he will score runs in Australia, South Africa as well as England,” he added.
India will begin their World Cup campaign against Australia at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on October 8.
