Former Indian fast bowler Zaheer Khan believes the forced changes to India’s playing XI could be a cause of concern as it would not help them to achieve the impetus in the World Cup. India made two changes to their starting XI for the match against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi, on Thursday.
Sanju Samson came in for Abhishek Sharma, who was ruled out with stomach illness. Samson was dismissed after playing a little cameo of 8-ball 22. Furthermore, Jasprit Bumrah made a comeback to the final XI after missing the last game due to fever. Mohammed Siraj, who had returned with impressive figures of 3-29 against the USA, had to make way for Bumrah.
“The way India was planning for the World Cup, Siraj was not in the plans anyway. He got to play and performed also, that is a positive thing. Looking at India’s campaign, this is the only cause of concern. You need momentum in a World Cup, there is one combination and that can only be strong when there are not many changes. So somewhere, these forced changes could make it slightly difficult to get the rhythm,” Zaheer Khan said on Cricbuzz.
On the other hand, former Indian pacer Mohit Sharma reckons Suryakumar Yadav’s team must take one game at a time.
“You can’t think about the next game and play the current game that way. Do not think a lot. There is time in between for the next game, so you can prepare then. If you think ahead, I don’t think that is the preparation,” he said.
Meanwhile, India had a topsy-turvy start against the USA, and Sharma said a wake-up was imperative for the Men in Blue.
“You cannot take anyone lightly in an ICC tournament. So yes, it was necessary (wake-up call for India). We are practising to have a batter at number eight always, and you got that in the first game itself. So from there Surya got into form, that is one thing. The other thing is, bowlers always get 200 to defend. We have forgotten somewhere to defend 140-160. So that happened as well early on,” he said.
India has posted 209 runs against Namibia at Delhi.
