Tim David lauds Tilak Varma’s performance after Mumbai Indians’ loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad

In a high-octane encounter that lit up the IPL 2024, the Mumbai Indians (MI) delivered a spirited performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), only to fall short by 31 runs in a 278-run chase. Despite the loss, MI’s robust performance, particularly from the batting unit, has become a talking point.

The match, which saw SRH setting a monumental target of 278 runs, was nothing short of a run-fest, with MI’s bowlers bearing the brunt of SRH’s aggressive batting. The daunting target set a challenging stage for MI, yet the team’s batters, led by a gallant effort from Tilak Varma and a solid start from openers Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma, kept the hope alive till the very end.

Tilak Varma emerged as the top scorer for MI, with a blistering 64 off 34 balls, a knock embellished with 2 fours and 6 sixes. His performance earned high praise from teammate Tim David, who lauded Varma’s performance at the post-match press conference.

“Tilak played beautifully. Hitting the ball cleanly is close to the best of what Tilak’s got. I still think he’s got more than that as well, and we saw a pretty special innings tonight,” David remarked.

The sense of belief within the MI camp was palpable, as Tim David shared insights into the team’s approach to chasing the mammoth total. “The talk in our dressing room is that we believe in our batting unit. We chased down some high scores last year, which was sticking to our approach as you can’t look at the total itself. It’s a process to get to that stage,” David explained.

David himself played a crucial role in the chase, contributing a quickfire 42* off 22 balls, including 2 fours and 3 sixes, demonstrating MI’s depth in batting. However, despite the valiant efforts and a commendable batting display that saw MI reaching 246/5, the target proved too steep, leaving them 31 runs short.

The match also marked SRH’s first victory of the IPL 2024 season and their first win under the new captaincy of Pat Cummins, providing a significant morale boost for the team.

While the loss puts MI in the bottom half of the points table early in the season, the performance, particularly the batting, holds promise for the matches ahead. The team’s ability to mount such a substantial challenge under pressure reflects a positive outlook for MI, with players like Tilak Varma and Tim David showing that they are forces to be reckoned with in the tournament.
