The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has witnessed an unprecedented response to its call for applications for the vacant position of Senior National Men’s Team head coach. The application window, which closed on Wednesday, July 3, 2024, saw a staggering 291 applications from aspiring coaches around the globe.
Among the applicants, 100 hold the prestigious UEFA Pro License diplomas, which signifies the highest level of coaching accreditation in European football. Additionally, 20 candidates possess AFC Pro License diplomas, and three have qualifications from the CONMEBOL, the governing body for football in South America. This diverse pool of highly qualified candidates highlights the global interest in leading India’s national football team.
The AIFF now faces the formidable task of meticulously scrutinizing these applications to identify the most suitable candidates for the role. AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey expressed his enthusiasm over the high-caliber responses received. “We have received an overwhelming response with some of the marquee names having expressed their interest in India,” said Mr. Chaubey.
As India prepares to embark on a new era in football, the selection of a head coach who can deeply understand and contribute to the development of Indian football is paramount. Mr. Chaubey emphasized the importance of this appointment: “As we get ready to write a new chapter in Indian football, it’s crucial for us to have a coach who is committed to the development of Indian football, to understand our culture and help design the national football philosophy.”
The AIFF aims to finalize the appointment by the end of July to ensure that the new head coach can lead the team during the September FIFA window. “We are hoping to onboard the candidate by the end of July, to ensure India utilise the September FIFA window participation,” Chaubey added.
The next phase of the selection process involves a committee headed by AIFF Vice President N.A. Haris. This committee, which includes Chairpersons of the Technical, League, Competitions, Finance, Development Committees, and the Treasurer, will review all the applications. They will then present a shortlist of candidates to the Executive Committee for the final decision.
The appointment of a new head coach marks a significant step for Indian football. The AIFF’s proactive approach in attracting top-tier coaching talent reflects its commitment to elevating the standard of the sport in the country. With a vision to develop a robust national football philosophy and enhance the team’s performance on the international stage, the federation is leaving no stone unturned in its quest for excellence.
