Aizawl FC delivered a remarkable second-half turnaround to defeat Chanmari FC 3-2 in a thrilling Mizo Derby clash in the Indian Football League 2025–26 at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on Tuesday.
The visitors, Chanmari FC, looked firmly in control at halftime after racing to a 2-0 lead. Malsawmsanga Renthlei opened the scoring in the 18th minute with what appeared to be an overhit cross that unexpectedly beat goalkeeper Vanlalhriatpuia. Just before the break, Jota doubled the advantage from the penalty spot after Aron Vanlalrinchhana was brought down inside the box.
Despite trailing by two goals, Aizawl FC emerged from the interval with renewed intent. Vincent Lalduhawma ignited the comeback early in the second half, reacting quickest in a crowded penalty area to pull one goal back and shift the momentum in favor of the home side.
The turning point came shortly after, when substitute Laldawngzuala produced a stunning impact off the bench. The forward scored twice in the space of three minutes, both goals coming from well-directed headers, to complete an electrifying comeback and put Aizawl FC ahead for the first time in the match.
Chanmari FC attempted to respond in the closing stages and created several opportunities in search of an equaliser. However, Aizawl’s defence held its ground under pressure. Goalkeeper Vanlalhriatpuia played a decisive role late on, making a crucial save during stoppage time to preserve the lead and secure all three points for his side.
The victory sees Aizawl FC climb to second place in the standings, at least temporarily, with eight points from five matches. Meanwhile, Chanmari FC remains in seventh position with five points.
Aizawl head coach R. Lalruatfela made notable changes to his starting lineup, handing first starts of the season to Colombian defender Rodríguez Luis Ángel and Uzbek midfielder Tumur Talipov. On the other side, Chanmari coach Victor Lalbiakmawia introduced three changes, including Emmanuel Badu and Renthlei, both of whom played key roles in the first half.
Laldawngzuala’s decisive contribution earned him the Player of the Match award, capping off a memorable evening for the People’s Club and their supporters in what proved to be one of the most exciting fixtures of the season so far.
