Aston Villa extended their remarkable winning run as Morgan Rogers scored twice to inspire a 2-1 Premier League victory over Manchester United at Villa Park on Sunday. 

The result made it 10 consecutive wins in all competitions for Unai Emery’s side and moved them to within three points of league leaders Arsenal, underlining their growing credentials at the top end of the table.

Villa struck first just before half-time when Rogers produced a moment of quality, firing home after being set up by John McGinn. 

Manchester United responded almost immediately, levelling in stoppage time as Matheus Cunha capitalised on a mistake from Matty Cash, with Patrick Dorgu providing the assist to send the teams in level at the break.

The hosts regained control early in the second half, and once again it was Rogers who made the difference. 

The midfielder curled a superb effort past the goalkeeper in the 57th minute after good work from Ollie Watkins, restoring Villa’s lead and igniting the home crowd of more than 43,000 supporters.

Manchester United pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages and created a number of half-chances, with Cunha and late substitute Shea Lacey both testing Emiliano Martinez. 

Mason Mount also went close with a free-kick in stoppage time, but Villa held firm to see out the victory despite sustained pressure.

After the match, Rogers credited the collective strength of the team for his standout performance. 

He said the confidence he is playing with comes from the consistency of Villa’s displays, adding that the atmosphere at Villa Park and the support of the fans have been key factors in the club’s impressive run of form.

The win further strengthens Aston Villa’s position in third place and extends their best top-flight run in decades, while Manchester United were left to reflect on another narrow defeat. 

For Emery’s side, the momentum continues to build as they remain firmly in the Premier League title conversation heading into the festive period.
