Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo has informed the club that he plans to return to training on December 29 after taking time away to address mental health difficulties.
The Uruguay international was granted indefinite leave earlier this season and is now targeting a comeback early in the new year following a period of personal reflection.
Araujo’s absence stemmed from psychological struggles rather than a physical injury.
After a costly error and red card in a Champions League match against Chelsea triggered intense criticism, the 26-year-old reportedly experienced anxiety and panic attacks, prompting him to step away from football to prioritise his wellbeing.
During his time off, Araujo undertook a spiritual pilgrimage to Israel, visiting religious sites in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
Reports indicate the journey helped him regain emotional balance and clarity, with the defender returning in an improved mental state and feeling ready to rejoin the demands of elite competition.
Following the completion of his trip, Araujo plans to spend Christmas with his family in Uruguay before travelling back to Catalonia.
He has earmarked December 29 as his return date to Barcelona’s training base, allowing him several sessions to build fitness ahead of the club’s first fixtures of 2026.
The centre-back is understood to be aiming for the Catalan derby against Espanyol on January 3 as a potential comeback match.
While it remains unclear whether head coach Hansi Flick will include him immediately, Araujo’s availability would provide a timely boost for a Barcelona defence that has had to adapt in his absence.
Barcelona have maintained a supportive stance throughout the defender’s ordeal, with both Flick and president Joan Laporta stressing that Araujo’s wellbeing comes before footballing considerations.
The club is expected to manage his reintegration carefully, but his decision to return has been welcomed as a positive step for both player and team.
