Bruno Fernandes Defends Cristiano Ronaldo and Denies Divisions in Portugal Squad

    October 22, 2026

Bruno Fernandes has publicly defended Cristiano Ronaldo following his controversial departure from Portugal’s national team camp, insisting that the 41-year-old forward remains the country’s greatest footballing icon.

The Manchester United midfielder revealed that he spoke personally with Ronaldo after his disagreement with head coach Jorge Jesus, emphasizing that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner deserves respect regardless of the circumstances surrounding his departure.

Speaking to reporters on October 3, Fernandes explained that Ronaldo’s achievements for Portugal and his influence on football worldwide should not be overshadowed by the recent controversy.

He also rejected suggestions that the situation had created divisions within the national team, urging supporters to remain united rather than take sides in the dispute.

    Fernandes Reveals Conversation With Ronaldo

Fernandes explained that he contacted Ronaldo to reaffirm his importance to Portuguese football.

The midfielder emphasized that Ronaldo would always hold a special place in the national team’s history, regardless of whether he returns to represent his country.

He also acknowledged the extraordinary relationship Ronaldo has developed with Portuguese supporters throughout his international career.

Fernandes believes the veteran forward’s accomplishments have earned him permanent recognition among football’s greatest players and a special place in the hearts of Portuguese people.

However, the Manchester United captain was equally concerned about the reaction to Ronaldo’s departure.

He urged supporters not to allow disagreements involving the player and the coaching staff to create divisions throughout the country.

According to Fernandes, the national team remains united, and the controversy should not distract the players from their responsibilities.

He also emphasized that the matter should be addressed privately by the people directly involved, with the objective of reaching a satisfactory resolution for both sides.

Fernandes explained that the players have largely stayed away from the disagreement and remain focused on their performances.

Ronaldo’s Departure Creates Uncertainty Over Portugal Future

Fernandes’ comments followed Ronaldo’s unexpected decision to leave Portugal’s training camp ahead of its Nations League match against Denmark.

The controversy began after Ronaldo remained an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway in Oslo.

Although the forward warmed up during the match, Jesus ultimately decided not to bring him onto the field.

The situation subsequently became public when Jesus acknowledged tensions surrounding Ronaldo’s role within the squad.

Ronaldo announced his departure on social media after discussions involving the coaching staff and Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proença.

At the time, the Al Nassr forward explained that he would eventually provide a detailed account of the circumstances behind his decision.

Portugal continued its Nations League campaign without Ronaldo, defeating Denmark 4-2 in Copenhagen.

Fernandes wore the captain’s armband during that match, assuming an important leadership responsibility following Ronaldo’s departure.

Fernandes Calls for Unity and Respect

Rather than publicly supporting either Ronaldo or Jesus in their disagreement, Fernandes emphasized the importance of respecting both parties.

He explained that the controversy should not become a debate over choosing sides, particularly given Ronaldo’s contributions to Portuguese football.

Fernandes also maintained that the national team remains focused on achieving results despite the attention surrounding its former captain’s departure from camp.

His comments reflected a desire to prevent the dispute from affecting the squad’s unity.

The midfielder has considerable experience playing alongside Ronaldo, both internationally and during their time together at Manchester United.

That relationship provided additional significance to his decision to contact the forward personally.

Fernandes also expressed hope that Ronaldo would avoid making an emotional decision about his international future.

Speaking separately to Portuguese broadcaster RTP, he suggested that if Ronaldo eventually decides to retire from international football, his departure should be marked by a celebration worthy of his achievements.

He compared Ronaldo’s importance to Portuguese football with that of legendary figures Eusébio and Luís Figo.

Jorge Jesus Also Recognizes Ronaldo’s Importance

Jesus has also acknowledged Ronaldo’s importance to Portugal despite their disagreement.

Before the Nations League match against Norway, the head coach described the forward as a symbol of the national team and the country.

However, Jesus declined to discuss the controversy in detail at that stage, explaining that his immediate priority was preparing Portugal for its next match.

The coach’s position highlighted the distinction between recognizing Ronaldo’s achievements and addressing the disagreement over his involvement with the squad.

Fernandes has taken a similar approach by defending Ronaldo’s legacy without publicly assigning responsibility for the dispute.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s most-capped player and all-time leading goalscorer, with 234 appearances and 146 goals.

He helped Portugal win the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles, establishing himself as the most prolific international scorer in men’s football history.

Fernandes’ message was clear: Ronaldo’s place in Portuguese football history is secure, and the disagreement with Jesus should be resolved without dividing the national team or its supporters.
