Chennaiyin FC has announced its third signing for the upcoming 2024-25 season with the acquisition of versatile defender PC Laldinpuia on a three-year deal. The 27-year-old Mizoram native, known for his ability to excel both in defense and midfield, joins the Marina Machans following an impressive stint with Jamshedpur FC.
Laldinpuia made his Indian Super League (ISL) debut with Jamshedpur FC in 2022 under the guidance of head coach Owen Coyle. His debut season was marked by success, as he played a crucial role in the team that clinched the ISL League Shield. Recognizing his potential and consistent performance, Chennaiyin FC’s management, along with Coyle, moved swiftly to secure his services for the upcoming seasons.
“In Laldinpuia we have got an incredible center back on the back of a great season on our hands. I have worked with him briefly and I’m confident he will be well loved amongst the squad,” remarked head coach Owen Coyle. His familiarity with Coyle’s coaching style is expected to facilitate a smooth transition and integration into the team dynamics at Chennaiyin.
Expressing his enthusiasm about the move, Laldinpuia said, “When they told me that they were interested in me, I was very excited to join the club. A big team and the coach is also a good coach, I know his system and all so I can play under him.” His comments reflect a keen understanding and appreciation of the tactical nuances and the expectations from him in his new role.
Laldinpuia’s recent performance statistics highlight his potential to strengthen Chennaiyin FC’s defense. Over the past three ISL seasons, he has played 35 matches, making 37 interceptions and 15 blocks. Additionally, his ability to win duels and make crucial tackles—106 and 35 respectively last season—highlight his defensive prowess and reliability.
Laldinpuia began his professional football journey with Chhinga Veng FC in the I-League second division in 2019, later advancing to play for Aizawl FC in the I-League. His consistent performance at these clubs paved the way for his entry into the ISL, where he quickly established himself as a key defensive asset.
As Chennaiyin FC gears up for the 2024-25 season, the addition of Laldinpuia is a strategic move to bolster the team’s defensive lineup. His previous experience under Coyle and his proven track record in the ISL position him as a valuable addition to the squad. Fans and analysts alike will be keen to see how his presence influences Chennaiyin’s performance in the upcoming season.
