Chennaiyin FC Signs Defender Vignesh Dakshinamurthy on Four-Year Deal

Chennaiyin FC has bolstered its squad ahead of the upcoming Indian Super League (ISL) season by signing 26-year-old Indian defender Vignesh Dakshinamurthy on a four-year contract. The versatile left-back, who can also operate in midfield, becomes the Marina Machans’ 12th signing of the summer, joining an array of talent including Mandar Rao Desai and PC Laldinpuia.

Vignesh’s arrival is seen as a significant addition to Chennaiyin FC’s defensive ranks, bringing both experience and versatility to head coach Owen Coyle’s setup. Speaking on the new signing, Coyle expressed his enthusiasm: “Delighted to sign another talented young Indian player who has already shown fantastic ability in the ISL. We faced a lot of competition to sign him from other clubs. Vignesh is a great addition to our squad and we look forward to working with him.”

Vignesh’s journey in professional football began with Bengaluru’s Ozone FC, where he spent six years—three in the academy and three with the first team. He made his senior debut at just 17 years old and quickly became one of Ozone’s standout players, helping the team reach the final round of the 2018 I-League 2.

In 2018, Vignesh took a significant step in his career by joining Mumbai City FC in the ISL. Over the course of five years with the Islanders, Vignesh established himself as a reliable left-back, making over 60 appearances across various competitions, including the prestigious AFC Champions League.

His consistent performances were integral to Mumbai City FC’s success, as he helped the team secure two ISL Shields (2021 and 2023) and one ISL Cup (2021). Known for his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively, Vignesh became a key figure in Mumbai’s defense, often making the left-back position his own.

Vignesh’s move to Chennaiyin FC follows a season where he featured for Hyderabad FC before going on loan to Odisha FC in January 2024. During his stint with Odisha, he made 17 appearances across all competitions, showcasing his adaptability and resilience. Vignesh also brings international experience to Chennaiyin, having been part of the Indian squad that finished as runners-up at the 2018 SAFF Championship.

Upon joining Chennaiyin FC, Vignesh expressed his excitement about returning to his home state and representing the two-time ISL champions. “Feels like being at home. [I am] really happy and proud to represent the city and Chennaiyin FC. I’m aware of the rich culture of the city and the club so I’ll always give my best and be a part of the club’s success,” Vignesh said.

Chennaiyin FC’s aggressive summer recruitment, including the signing of Vignesh, reflects their ambition to reclaim their status as one of the ISL’s top teams. With the 2024-25 season approaching, the club and its fans will be eager to see how these new additions, led by Coyle, perform on the pitch. Vignesh’s experience and proven track record in the ISL could prove pivotal as Chennaiyin FC looks to make a strong push for the title.
