Cristiano Ronaldo is synonyms with breaking records. The star Portuguese striker is well known to stand tall when his team has their backs against the wall. Ronaldo, who recently signed a new deal with his former club Manchester United from Juventus, scored a brace as Portugal beat Ireland by 2-1 in the World Cup qualifying round on Wednesday.
Ronaldo first missed a penalty in the first half when Bruno Fernandes was tipped by Jeff Hendrick in the 15th minute. Subsequently, Ireland stunned Portugal when John Eghan scored in the stoppage time of the first half.
It looked like Ireland will register a famous victory against Portugal but it wasn’t to be as Ronaldo scored in the 89th minute with a header, which was 109 International goal as equaled Ali Daei’s record with it.
In the sixth minute of the injury time, Ronaldo once again found the back of the net with a header after an assist from Joao Mario as he surpassed Ali Daei’s record and scored his 110th International goal for his national team.
Ronaldo was delighted not just for breaking the all-time record but also to help his team get over the line against Ireland in the Group A contest.
“I’m so happy, not just because I beat the record, but for the special moment that we had,” Ronaldo told Sky Sports. “I have to appreciate what the team did, we believed until the end. I’m so glad.”
“It’s part of the game, part of the business,” said the five-time Ballon d’Or winner. “Sometimes you score, sometimes you make a mistake.”
Ronaldo was booked for his celebration and he will now miss the next match against Azerbaijan. Portugal is currently at the top of Group A with 10 points under their belt as they have won three out of their four matches whereas one has been drawn.
