East Bengal FC have strengthened their midfield ahead of the upcoming campaign by securing the signing of experienced Indian midfielder Danish Farooq. The move marks the club’s first midfield addition since the departure of Miguel Figueira and is expected to add both depth and versatility to the defending Indian Super League (ISL) champions’ squad.
According to reports, Farooq has agreed to a two-year contract with the Red and Gold Brigade. The 30-year-old is set to play a significant role not only in the ISL but also in East Bengal’s AFC competition, where the club will look to build on its recent success.
Farooq arrives after his stint with Kerala Blasters FC and brings valuable ISL experience to the Kolkata-based side. His addition gives East Bengal another reliable Indian box-to-box midfield option alongside MD Rashid and Jeakson Singh, while also increasing competition for places with players such as Souvik Chakraborty.
Nicknamed the “Ronaldo of Kashmir” for his pace, close ball control and attacking style, Farooq has built a reputation as one of the league’s most energetic midfielders. During his career, he has represented Real Kashmir FC, Bengaluru FC and Kerala Blasters, while also making five appearances for the Indian national team. He registered an assist during the CAFA Nations Cup with the Blue Tigers.
One of Farooq’s biggest strengths is his versatility. Comfortable as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder or in a wider role, he offers tactical flexibility and has the experience of performing in high-pressure ISL matches. His ability to make late runs into the penalty area and contribute in the final third adds another attacking dimension to East Bengal’s midfield.
The midfielder is equally valued for his relentless work rate, pressing ability and leadership qualities. His presence is expected to improve the team’s balance while providing greater competition across the middle of the pitch.
East Bengal have already shown their ambition by recruiting experienced ISL performers such as Bipin Singh, whose contribution helped the club secure its maiden ISL title. The arrival of Danish Farooq continues that approach, with the club adding another proven domestic player capable of strengthening both the starting lineup and the squad’s overall depth as they prepare to defend their league crown and compete on the continental stage.
