East Bengal FC scripted a memorable comeback victory over Inter Kashi FC to clinch the Indian Super League title on Thursday, ending a painful 22-year wait for the club’s biggest domestic honour.
Playing in front of a packed and passionate crowd at the Kishore Bharati Stadium, the Red and Gold Brigade recovered from an early setback to secure a 2-1 win and spark massive celebrations among supporters. The victory marked a historic moment for the Kolkata giants, who had long chased the country’s premier football crown.
Inter Kashi stunned the home supporters in the 15th minute with a swift and clinical counterattack. David Munoz delivered a deep cross into the box where Alfred Planas reacted brilliantly, connecting with a spectacular volley that left the East Bengal defence helpless. The strike silenced the stadium momentarily as the visitors took control of the contest.
Despite falling behind, East Bengal gradually regained momentum and looked far more aggressive after halftime. The hosts increased the pressure on Inter Kashi’s backline and were rewarded just five minutes into the second half.
Moroccan striker Youssef Ezzejjari brought East Bengal level in the 50th minute after latching onto a perfectly weighted through ball from Anwar Ali. Ezzejjari kept his composure inside the box and calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper to reignite the title hopes of the home side.
The decisive moment arrived in the 73rd minute. Bipin Singh whipped in a dangerous cross from the flank, and Mohammed Rashid timed his run to perfection before stretching out a leg to guide the ball into the net. The goal triggered wild celebrations on the touchline and in the stands as East Bengal moved within touching distance of the championship.
The Kolkata club held firm during the closing stages, surviving late pressure from Inter Kashi before the final whistle confirmed a landmark triumph.
At the same time, defending champion Mohun Bagan Super Giant defeated Sporting Club Delhi 2-1 at the Salt Lake Stadium. However, the result was not enough to retain the title.
East Bengal and Mohun Bagan both finished the season with 26 points from 13 matches. With the Kolkata derby between the two sides ending in a 1-1 draw earlier in the campaign, the championship was ultimately decided on goal difference. East Bengal’s superior tally of 19 compared to Mohun Bagan’s 14 sealed a historic title victory for the Red and Gold Brigade.
